Question
Can wrist straps be worn around the ankle (instead of on the wrist) and still be effective?
Answer
Yes. There needs to be good electrical contact between the user’s skin and the wrist band. The minimum recommended technical requirement for a Wrist Strap System per Table 1 of ANSI/ESD S20.20 is less than 35 x 10^6 ohms. An integrated Tester will also verify presence of 1 Megohm resistor as the lower limit of resistance. This test should occur at least daily. Per ESD Handbook TR 20.20 paragraph 5.3.2.4.4 Test Frequency “Because wrist straps have a finite life, it is important to develop a test frequency that will guarantee integrity of the system. Typical test programs recommend that wrist straps that are used daily should be tested daily.
