Question
We are using an ESD floor in an ESD area. We have ESD approved chairs in that area, with a drag chain. Is the drag chain needed, or does the floor and the ESD approved chair establish a proper ground? -Mark, Fremont, CA
Answer
Depending on the manufacturer and their design, the ground chain may be necessary to establish a good connection to ground. In come cases, the chair frame ties to the wheels which can be themselves conductive to establish a good ground connection. If the chair came with a ground chain, then most likely that was its way to establish a connection to ground and should be left in place. The grounding of the chair will only work as intended if the floor is also conductive and coupled to ground.
