Question
If the floor itself is properly grounded or ESD mats are used and technicians are wearing working foot straps, is there still a necessity for wrist straps and if so, why? - Vincent, Cincinnati, OH
Answer
Yes, there may still be a need for wrist straps, even when you have a full mobile program in place (foot grounders and conductive floor). When a technician is at a stationary worksurface, where the they may be sitting down or resting their feet on foot rests, their feet may no longer be adequately connected to ground (the floor). To ensure that the technician or operator is grounded at all times whilst handling Electrostatic Discharge Sensitive (ESDS) devices, it is recommended that they wear a grounded wrist strap when parked at a stationary workbench or work surface within an ESDS area.
