Question
What is the best way to ground some existing shelving and racks we already have? We have some Metro stainless steel racks and some Lyon shelving. We are currently using grounding wire, going shelf to shelf and then to ground. Is there a better way? - Anonymous, Tustin, CA
Answer
Yes there is a better way. Make sure the connections of the shelves to ground are done in parallels versus in series, i.e., hard wire each shelf individually rather than daisy chain them together. In addition, a bare metal surface can also put your sensitive devices at risk because the energy transferred per unit time will be much larger than if the surface were dissipative. Therefore use of dissipative shelf liners are can be an excellent addition to your ESD Control program.
