Question
Is it proper to connect an ESD flooring system to the building lightning protection/ground system? - Vince , Denver, CO
Answer
We would highly not recommend connecting the ESD flooring system to the building lightning protection ground system. Typically, the lightning ground system has a separate and direct path to ground without any abrupt bends in its path. When a lightning strike does occur, a rather large current pulse will travel this path, if the ESD flooring system was in its path, you may have a lot of unhappy people in the aftermath. Keep the lightning ground path separate from your building/earth ground circuit. They may end up at the same point (earth ground attached to an 8 foot ground rod at the outside of the building, but the paths should be kept separate. Check with a local licensed electrician and the governing electrical codes for your area.
